How To Make Your Own Metal Thrusters

Post by 焱刀良 on Fri 24 Jun 2011, 12:53 am

A damn good tutorial IMHO for saving money on those overprice metal thrusters..

Gianshopao wrote:This is a tutorial on how to make your own 1/100 scale thrusters for your models. You just need a bunch of cheap stuff to make it.

This is a very good alternative for people who can't buy any aftermarket metal thrusters. I'm one of those people and found the perfect(well not really) solution.

    1) Grab some ballpens at your local book store. Make sure that they have metal covers where the tip of the ballpen is. Its up to you what size you want. Before buying them you might wanna check the inside of the metal cover and see if its clean/well polished/uniform color.

    Here's an example.

    2) Test fit the metal covers on the piece you will be placing it.

Now you see that their too long. At this point they don't really look right and don't even look like thrusters

Here is what we want to achieve.

    3) Estimate the part of the metal covers that needs to be cut and sanded.

    Here's an example.

    4) Cutting and Sanding- When I made these thrusters I used some kind of machine.(forgot what it's called). Now you don' really need any machine to achieve a perfect cut. You can use a jeweler's saw.

    Here's what a jeweler's saw looks like.

Just saw the metal covers on the area you marked it. Cut them just a few millimeters away from the marked area. Ones you've cut it. Get a metal file and sand it down until your satisfied with the length. Get another metal file with a higher grit to smoothen it a bit.

    Here's the result

    5) Test fit again and see if everything looks good.

    FINISHED PRODUCT

If you do all 4 steps correctly, you got yourself some cheap metal thrusters.

    THANKS FOR VIEWING!

I dont claim any credit for this..

depending on the size of the thruster u want, u can just go to the book store to take a look at the pens. as long as the pen has a detachable metal cap it can most probably be used for your thruster.
