    Modelling books that helps modellers

Post by StarDus on Sat 16 Jul 2011, 4:52 pm

Just to share with you guys, one of the ways I learn about modelling knowledge is through books. Initially when starting, I refer mostly to these 2 books: Question

    1. Nomoken: Nomoto Modeling

    2. MAX渡邊&大越友惠的我愛鋼彈模型

Recently I happened to see Nomoken (chinese version) in Hobby Kulture. I saw it in Hobby Art Gallery some times ago too, now dunno still have or not. You guys might want to grab a copy, I think its really a useful book. Very Happy

Thanks to aucheukyan for the links.

Please correct me if I am wrong, I think only book 1 & 2 are by Nomoken (Yes, I know all the 4 books cover page states Nomoken), 3 & 4 are by another Jap expert modeller.

Those new to gunpla and can understand chinese, do read through these 4 books, understand and practise them, and I think at least 90% of the modelling questions that you have will be answered! And this is also a fast way for you to 'level-up'~ Very Happy

After flipping through all the 4 books, i'd say the first two volumes covers almost all aspects of scale modelling from beginners to the really advanced stuff such as putty sculpting, scratch-building and even resin casting........ (i must admit, the amount of stuff that's written on these two books was sufficient to give me an info overload as i went on....... )

The next two volumes are more like WIPs from the modellers, in full colour print, along with details on how they do certain things for their models, could pick up a few pointers from there. Very Happy

Probably the one die-die must-read series (well, almost) for all levels. Smile

vol 1 is tools and expendables intro, and some basic pointers and builds
vol 2 is by Kenichi Nomoto (i think), some practical building tips
vol 3 and 4 is by Max Watanabe with the same practical building tips and some modding too, also includes resin and other stuff

I also havent digest all yet Sad

sorry, i am asking a quite dumb question, i am amazed by those custom built model kit and wish to learn how to do so, although reading the book may help a bit, where to get fresh idea to do a mod? when i see those master doing the modification, i ask myself, "how come i never thought of that?" but how to get the creative juice running to do the mod?  Question

Eh.. my personal opinion as an amatuer, creative juices are very subjective n personal. there is no hard n fast rule to attain creative juices. Creative ideas can come fr various sources and 'as long as it works', anything goes. One can even use e pen for a long booster pack or even the 'stem' from a used pen and paper clip as part of a hydraulic system.
Imho, reading thru hobby mag, looking at other people's wip/completed kit, looking around your surrounding or even sth like asking pple ard u for opinion (i do that alot) are some form of 'studying' for creativity.

    My humble noobie 2 cents
