What to look out for in getting an airbrush set (acrylic paint user)

Post by ahchap on Tue 04 Dec 2012, 6:32 pm

    Hi Everyone,

Am thinking of getting an airbrush set. However I am new in airbrush and hope you guys can give some pointers.

    1) Prefer to use Tamiya acrylic paint for health reason. Is it recommendable to use with airbrush? Heard cleaning is a big problem and acrylic paint clogs easily which may damage the airbrush from various info source i gathered.

    2) Thinking of buying from airbrush.sg which I think price is reasonable for a local seller. But I am not that clear on all those technical aspect of a compressor. Intend to get

    • Twin Action Airbrush Set [EAD-K381]
      Mini Air Compressor [EAD-B81]

Is these compatible? Basically just want something that is low noise and good enough to spray my gunpla with acrylic paint. Or do I need one of those High Flow Compressor?

Appreciate if some experience users can share a pointer or two with me this noob. Thanks

Hi Ahchap. Ever consider those mini compressor? I have been using mini compressor for 4 months and painted 3 gundams. Costed me around $45 for the compressor and dual action airbrush. No brand or anything... but it's quite reliable and quite for me.

$45?! Shocked Didn't know it can be so cheap.

Did you bought it locally or you bought it from the website you shared? Btw, you tried using acrylic paint on it before? Works well?

Hope to hear from you again, thanks dude Very Happy

Ya, I got it from the website I posted. It's all in china, so you need an agent to help you with it.

I'm using Peeka as my agent. Use the 14 days shipping, not expensive if you combined it with other items.

I tried Tamiya and Mr Colour, both are fine... just that you would need to add more thinner than usual because the PSI is not as strong as a normal compressor. Having said that, I have no experience with an high end compressor or branded airbrush, so I can't really can't compare. All I know is... it works.

    Hi Xeon

Ya, the link includes the whole set. Everything about the set is fine except the yellow airbrush holder. The damn thing broke after a while... got to stick it back with super glue.

I normally don't see such compressor in local hobby shops.. maybe because of lower profit margin? I don't know...

So far i have used it with acrylic paint, metallic paint and enamel paint. Not much of a problem. However, things to note, it get choked up easily if the paint is too thick, I normally just add more thinner and use a tissue with a few drop of thinner to block up the spray nozzle to reverse the airflow. That will clear out the choke quickly.

Also, I'm a noob also, so my advice is only within my limited knowledge.

To buy from Taobao, you need a third party buyer to help you. They will charge you 5% of the buying price. The shipping cost to Singapore will be based on the size or weight, depending on the type of shipping you opt for. You can find out more details from the link I gave earlier.

Wow 45 bucks for a airbrush is REALLY cheap.

I would sooo get it if I can solve the problem of clearing the fumes out of my house...
