First time painting have a few questions =D

Post by wanrong on Tue 20 Nov 2012, 12:16 am

Hi, getting my mg sinanju soon wishes to paint it a titanium finish Very Happy

read around to know the basic of painting it titanium or candy gloss.

    I roughly know the steps:

    1. whtie base prime > gloss black > chrome > clear red ( for titanium finsih ) thru experience titanium or candly gloss looks better(using silver instead of chrome)?

    2. Next do i need to sand after every layer of painting or even after top coat?

    3. Normally i see people snap fit their kits and then dissmantle it to paint is that neccessary?

    4. Intending to hand paint the whole kit except spraying primier is there anything else to look out for?

    5. cant think of any yet since my kit hasnt arrive

    Thanks guys

    1. think chrome would be better
    2. nope dn need sand every layer!
    3. nope not necessary. ppl snapfit first to get an overall look before proceeding to paint. up to the modeller himself. '
    4. i think for candy gloss/titanium, spray paint all the way would be best. minimises brush marks.
    5. ask again if u have any Smile

i'm only doing 1 kit so thinking of cutting cost therefore using hand paint.

Since no need to sand every layer which layer do i sand then? Top coat or primier?

Sand paper from hardware store can be use? Or better to get from model shop?

hmmm... my opinion... hehe.. since it just one kit... getting acrylic paint will be cheaper. But bear in mind that hand painting need patience too. Too much thinner or water will affect your silver or clear red. You might even have left over paint to keep in future for other kit.
But if you spend a little more to get spray cans. can try RJ brand since it is cheaper than tamiya. The result will be better.

You at least need to sand the bare plastic to get rid of the nubs. Prime after sanding/washing the kit to check for any scratch or nubs. Need to wash cause got dusts and it will affect candy gloss...

Sandpaper can get from hardware store... I got my 1000 - 1200 from them. But 400 from Hobby shop cause I can't find them around.

Here's an added suggestion for finishing up a candy coat: -

    1. As per the steps outlined - primer-gloss black-chrome-clear red
    2. 3 layers of gloss top coat, make sure you give enough time for each coat to fully dry and set
    3. Sand down with 1,500 grit, 2,000 grit and then finally with tamiya component. Make sure that you wet the sand paper before sanding down. Also be very gentle with the sanding process.

An alternative is to make sure that your kit is very smooth - ie sand down the kits properly before you start on step 1 above. I've never tried this but I've heard that this is easier overall to do.

Also if you really want a very nice candy coat, I think you'll really need to think about AB instead of hand paint. Can go down to HAW where they do AB rental at very reasonable rates.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Wanrong,

To share with you, you can done the hand painting candy tone. I mixed my tamiya clear red with tamiya acrylic thinner. and I think with chrome base will make the clear red shine. Very Happy

I'm actually siding towards titanium rather than candy tone.

Was also thinking of tamiya light gun metal for the inner frame. Anyone have images of how it will turn out? Want the inner to be shiny as well. Embarassed

Is wet sandpapering a must? What does it do anyway?

    Hand paint and sand paper

Post by Gary Choo on Wed 21 Nov 2012, 9:33 pm

Wet sand paper is a must, it works like a using lubricant and makes the surface smoother,
Hand painting can be done If u use mr hobby paint those laque types , it will not leave any brush lines if u mixed with thinner.just my 2 cents advice.
    good Idea

this is how I worked with gloss paint (gold). not sure if it's applicable for candy gloss colors or not, but I think the basics should be the same.

-> cut the parts from the runner.
-> sand the nubs left with 400 grit sandpaper, then continue with 600, then 1000.
-> spray primer, don't overspray, try to make it even. I stopped the previous step at 1000 grit sandpaper because most common primers are roughly similar to 1000 grit finishes, so I don't think sanding with higher grit sandpapers before priming would make a difference.
-> wet sand the primer after it cures (best leave it for half-one day), using 1200 grit sand paper, then 1500, then 2000. (I'm not sure if you should go on further, but I'm quite satisfied with 2000, or even 1500).
-> spray gloss black base, make sure the coat is thin and even.
-> spray gold (or in your case it's silver/titanium/chrome), again, make it thin and even. spray too thick and you risk getting orange peel effect on the surface.
-> spray the clear color of choice.

I've read on some sites that it'd be better to buff (sanding with very high grit sandpaper? I'm not sure about this term either) the gloss black and gold/silver paint between the steps above, but again, probably that depends on how much you're looking for. I was quite happy with what I got using the steps above. Embarassed

Sounds ok and for gold frame on sinnaju will be

    primier > chrome > gold ?

Alittle problem will be that i'm hand painting since this is the only kit i be doing Embarassed

Just recieved the sinnaju abit overwhelmed by the parts when first open, gonna shop for tools+paint later on. HAG a good place to shop for them?

Lastly if painting inner frame i heard that applying top coat on the inner frame will harden the movement of the kit itself so is it a good idea to do it?

    Ehh nope
should be Primer -> Gloss Black/White -> gold
If you topcoat the inner frame, avoid the joint areas or after the paint has dried, flex the joints will do.

agar tamiya spray can how much ar? Need to decide weather to get spray cans or paint itself. Gonna need some other tools as well like aligator clips , sand paper , paint brush , side cutters. Sad

Gaia or tamiya paint is better? I know Gaia is lacquer base only. Abit regret never get all the paint at HAG just now...if suddenly turn to gaia need go back for another trip Crying or Very sad

Edit: After going through alot of thread i found that some people are using this RJ london spray can. From what i gathered is that this is really cheap can this be use for gundam kit as well? If so i might consider getting all RJ spray cans for making the titanium/candy gloss finish.

For RJ primier what is it actually called? Just surfacer?

Tamiya spray per cans is 8.90, gaia is good for hand brushing.

Normally i get a mix of paints, u never know when u need it. Because a large surface u try hand painting it will be tedious.
We normally hand paint the small details.

Rj primer is known as primer lor. The best chrome effect i used so far is rj chrome spray.

Currently I am using paints (Tamiya because it is acrylic based). I do not use spraycan because I have no where I can spray in/around my house.

And I must agree with Heeroyuy that handpaint is SUPER hard to get a smooth finish (personally tried, tested and vomited blood). But it IS good for detailing. So my take is that its rather impossible to get a super clear smooth finish with handpaint if that is what you are aiming for.

So if you are able to go spraycan I would encourage it I guess, thou I have never tried.

Pros correct me if i'm wrong xD

Embarassed Found RJ spray cans near my house there. Bought a flat white(tho it wrote anti-coro primeir) i take it as white primier.

Bought Rj Chrome and RJ black(i asked the uncle he told me normal black is gloss finish) and 5 range of sand paper from 400 to 1500grit.

Now still need to get 1bottle sliver 1bottle gold for hand painting details and tamiya clear red spray cans maybe gun metal as well for inner frame. I notice the Rj chrome is enamel base can it mix with acrylic?

Wasted my money for buying mr surfacer top coat and primier. Anyone want get it off my hands? LOLis 100ml small bottle de.

I notice i dont have a cutter, can i buy any side cutter from hardware store? Since i'm going to cut the nubs and sand it anyway. Else it will really burst out of my budget.

Yes u can get the cutter from the hardware shop, but it must be angled so it can do a clean cut.

    All spray cans are laquer.

    Very Happy

After cutting it i would just use a pen knife to remove the excess nub then proceed to sand it.

What about washing the parts? water with dish detergent will do? or just wet sanding can does the job as well?
